May backyard birds

When we moved into our new place in Boise back in January, we tried to set up feeders in the backyard to attract birds. We tried placing them in a variety of different placements, and always offered most birds’ favorite food: black-oil sunflower seeds. Despite our best efforts we were never able to attract any birds to our feeders. The backyard squirrels were grateful for the seed, but that was about all the action we saw. Then one day in May I moved the feeders off to the side of the house next to the grill and the compost pile just to get them out of the way while I mowed the lawn, and all of a sudden we had birds all over our feeders. I’m not sure what was so magical about the new location, but we’re grateful to start getting visitors. We haven’t had anything too interesting yet, but if we keep the regulars well-fed, any oddballs passing through the area will have an easier time following the local birds to the good feeding spots, and hopefully we’ll have a shot at seeing something great. Here’s a few birds we saw in May.
