Hooded Merganser at Julia Davis Park

In mid-November we enjoyed a quick lunch break trip to Julia Davis park. We were hoping to see a Hooded Merganser that was hanging out there, as somehow we had missed seeing one earlier in the year.

Julia Davis Park gets a pretty good variety of waterfowl, considering it’s right in the middle of town. One odd bird that’s been hanging out in the area for quite some time is this Snow Goose that’s missing a wing.

Wood Ducks are plentiful year round, with American Wigeons joining in for the winter months.

Nearby a Red-tailed Hawk kept an eye on things from his perch in a tree.

Ring-necked Ducks are fairly common here in the winter too.

Hooded Mergansers show up in low numbers every year too. The females are more subtly plumed and can blend in with some of the other waterfowl if you don’t look carefully, but the males stick out like a sore thumb.
