Common Loons on Arrowrock Reservoir

Each year in April, Common Loons migrate through the Treasure Valley in fairly decent numbers. You can often find one or two at a time on several of the well established migrant waterfowl spots, like Indian Creek Reservoir, Blacks Creek Reservoir, Lake Lowell, etc. but our favorite place to find them is up Highway 21 on Lucky Peak Lake and Arrowrock Reservoir.

I sometimes feel like we’re the only birders that visit Lucky Peak Lake or Arrowrock Reservoir with any kind of frequency, since we’ve seen quite a few nice birds up there that seem like they’re definitely right where they belong, but nonetheless haven’t been reported very much before. The bird concentration isn’t always too high, but there are nearly always a few good birds to find with a bit of patience. For a few years now, it’s been our go-to place for spring migrant loons. We headed up there in early April to see how many we could find, and actually ended up seeing at least 15, with several different groupings of 3-4 at a time.

For some reason we couldn’t find any on Lucky Peak Lake on this trip, but as soon as we passed Arrowrock Dam we started finding them all over the place.

We got to enjoy one bird struggling with a fish that looked far too big to get down. I’m sure he had no problem with it, but I can’t imagine swallowing something whole that’s nearly as big as my head.

Not bad for a quick evening drive after work. The sunset on the way home was fantastic as well.
