Slow start to spring migration at Discovery Park

For our last birding trip of April we headed to Discovery Park, part of Lucky Peak State Park, and a great place to find migrant warblers in the spring and fall. Discovery Park is just a few minutes from our house, so it’s a nice place for us to check out on weeknights or when we don’t have much time.

It was on the early side for most warblers, but right on time for a first-of-year Lewis’s Woodpecker. We’ve seen Lewis’s Woodpecker at this location each spring since 2011, and they have probably been regular here for much longer. However, on this trip there was just a Brewer’s Blackbird occupying the Lewis’s Woodpecker’s usual perch above the restrooms.

We took our time and really scoured the area, and came up with 28 species, mostly just year-round and newly arriving summer residents. Soaring along the canyon edges was a pair of Red-tailed Hawks.

Near the river we had a late Dark-eyed Junco (most have headed further north or to higher elevations to breed by now).

Canada Geese were on the river, probably with a nest nearby.

Just a short walk north and east of Discovery Park is Sandy Point, which sits at the bottom of Lucky Peak Dam.

The canyons on either side of the river and lake seem to funnel a lot of flyovers. We saw an Great Blue Heron and an Osprey with a fish pass overhead.

On the way back to the car as the sun was fading we had our first-of-year Western Kingbird for Ada County.
