Common Loons on Arrowrock Reservoir

In early April a fellow birder shared some really nice photos of a Common Loon at Lucky Peak Lake, and it created a fair bit of excitement among some of the other birders in town. Quite a few people went up to the lake looking for it and were disappointed when they couldn’t find it. I shared the following info on the Idaho Birding Facebook Group in hopes of helping some of these people out:

I've noticed that several people have been up to Lucky Peak Reservoir trying to re-find the Common Loon that Dan Cook reported a few days ago, and not everybody has been successful. Just as an FYI, April is prime time for northward Common Loon migration, and Lucky Peak Lake and Arrowrock Reservoir are both good places to look for them. Arrowrock Reservoir has been the "go to" spot for me and Ellen for the past several years since we live on the east side of town. Last year we had 15 between Arrowrock Dam and Irish Boat Launch, and we went up tonight to check and found one at Macks Creek, one just below the spillway at Arrowrock Dam, and six between Arrowrock Dam and Irish Boat Launch, including one that was calling and doing some neat wing displays. If you can't find the one Dan Cook reported near Lucky Peak Dam, just keep moving up the reservoir and you're sure to find one eventually. Those of you that keep a year list could put this in your annual game plan for an easy way to get your Common Loons for the year. For more details check out this blog post I wrote about the loons at Arrowrock Reservoir last year.

Some of the birds we saw on this trip were actually calling and doing some neat wing displays which we hadn’t seen before. They would just hold out their wings and look around, presumably to make sure they looked big and impressive if another loon looked their way.

When they were singing, they took an opposite posture, stretching out low just over the surface. Very fun to watch!
