Black Scoter near Hagerman

On December 28 Zeke Watkins found a Black Scoter during the Hagerman CBC at the Upper Salmon Falls Reservoir. This area is also known as Whooper Flats, and it’s the area just downstream from the Owsley Bridge, and just upstream from the Upper Salmon Falls Power Plant.

eBird map of Black Scoter reports for the Hagerman area.

The Hagerman area is one of the best places in southern Idaho to look for rare waterfowl in the winter. This area has had lots of other good birds in years past, so it was no surprise to hear about the good find. A few others had re-found the Black Scoter over the next few days, and as soon as I got a chance I headed out. Nora was still struggling to get back into her normal nap schedule (i.e. at home in her crib) after our Christmas trip to Rexburg so in the afternoon I took her out for a car nap. She took a miraculously long nap, so long in fact that I was able to make the entire drive out to Hagerman, quickly find and photograph the Black Scoter, and get almost all the way back to Boise before she woke up. Here’s my documentation shot from the trip.
